Thegentlemencame;andshethoughthelookedasifhewouldhaveansweredherhopes;but，alas!theladieshadcrowdedroundthetable，whereMissBennetwasmakingtea，andElizabethpouringoutthecoffee，insocloseaconfederacythattherewasnotasinglevacancynearherwhichwouldadmitofachair。Andonthegentlemensapproaching，oneofthegirlsmovedclosertoherthanever，andsaid，inawhisper:

Whenthetea-thingswereremoved，andthecard-tablesplaced，theladiesallrose，andElizabethwasthenhopingtobesoonjoinedbyhim，whenallherviewswereoverthrownbyseeinghimfallavictimtohermothersrapacityforwhistplayers，andinafewmomentsafterseatedwiththerestoftheparty。Shenowlosteveryexpectationofpleasure。Theywereconfinedfortheeveningatdifferenttables，andshehadnothingtohope，butthathiseyesweresooftenturnedtowardshersideoftheroom，astomakehimplayasunsuccessfullyasherself。

Elizabethsmiled。

“Lizzy，youmustnotdoso。Youmustnotsuspectme。Itmortifiesme。IassureyouthatIhavenowlearnttoenjoyhisconversationasanagreeableandsensibleyoungman，withouthavingawishbeyondit。Iamperfectlysatisfied，fromwhathismannersnoware，thatheneverhadanydesignofengagingmyaffection。Itisonlythatheisblessedwithgreatersweetnessofaddress，andastrongerdesireofgenerallypleasing，thananyotherman。”
